North India in grip of cold

North India is reeling under a severe cold wave and foggy conditions and there is no sign of the cold abating. A fresh spell of mild snowfall lashed hills of Himachal Pradesh while mercury in several parts of the state and Kashmir dipped as low as minus 15 degree Celsius.

Cold wave further tightened its grip over Kashmir today as mercury dipped by several notches in most parts of the Valley with Kargil, in Ladakh region, recording the coldest night of the winter so far.

Kargil shivered at minus 15.7 degrees Celsius, a drop of almost seven degrees from the Saturday night’s low of minus 8.9 degree Celsius.

The town was also the coldest place in the state. The nearby Leh town registered a minimum temperature of minus 14.8 degree Celsius on Saturday night.

The night temperature in Srinagar dropped over two notches to settle at a low of minus 0.6 degree Celsius.

Plains of Uttar Pradesh witnessed partly cloudy skies and cold tightened its grip over the state.

According to the Meteorological department, fog occurred at isolated places over eastern Uttar Pradesh, disrupting normal life.

Najibabad in Bijnore district remained the coldest place in the state as temperature stood at 2.4 degree Celsius.

Kanpur recorded a minimum of 3.5 degrees Celsius while state capital Lucknow recorded 5 degree Celsius.

There was also no let-up in cold in Himachal Pradesh. Strong icy winds lashed the region causing a further drop in mercury.

The tribal areas and other higher reaches had another spell of mild snowfall and sky remained partially overcast in mid and lower hills of the state. The minimum temperature in tribal areas stayed between minus 12 and minus 20 degree Celsius.

Keylong and Kalpa in tribal Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts recorded a low of minus 8.5 degree Celsius and minus 4.4 degree Celsius while Manali recorded a low of minus 3.5 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, cold wave continued to sweep most parts of Punjab and Haryana as Adampur recorded 1.1 degree Celsius temperature.

Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in the two states. Rajasthan too is under the grip of cold wave; Churu and Sriganganagar were the coldest places in the state with an identical minimum of 2.1 degree Celsius.
