NOFN to be launched from Kerala: Prasad

Kerala —God’s own country — is going to be the first state in country to be fully covered by the government’s National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project to bridge the digital divide in the villages.

Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The government is going to launch NOFN at Idukki in Kerala on January 12 and we are keen to work efficiently with the state on this much awaited project.” On Monday, the minister will launch the process for connecting the first Idukki district in the state.

He said, “Under this project panchayats will be digitalized to bolster e-services with high-speed connectivity to connect 50,000 villages by the end of this year.”

The project, envisioned in 2011, aims to connect a total of 250,000 villages by the end of 2016. For this, about 700,000 km of optical fibre is to be laid.
