No headway in murder of media professional’s wife

Even after three days of a highway robbery that led to the murder of the wife of a senior media professional in Palwal, Haryana police is still groping in the dark.  The cops, on Monday, called up the victim, Mukesh Lakhanpal, to revisit the scene of crime, but could not finalise the sketch of the culprits. They have now asked him to come again.

‘We are investigating the matter afresh from all possible angles,’ said Virender Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Palwal.

He, however, ruled out the possibility of rape and  contended that Lakhanpal’s wife Satvinder was attacked because she protested to the robbery.

The incident took place on NH-2 near Palwal last Saturday night, when the couple were returning from  Agra. Three robbers looted around Rs 30,000 in cash and jewellery from them. They tied up Lakhanpal to a tree and murdered his wife, Satvinder, 38. The victims were residents of Mayur Vihar Phase-III, east Delhi. Satvinder got married to Mukesh four years ago. She has two children from a previous marriage.

Her body was found in the morning on Saturday, after a farmer came to the field and spotted Mukesh tied to the tree.

‘I stopped the car around 11 pm to go the washroom. A Maruti Alto, which was following us, stopped near the car and three men got down,’ said Lakhanpal, the circulation head of Business World magazine. ‘Satvinder slapped one of the men and asked them to stop abusing. She fought till the three men overpowered her. They then  dragged her to a field, leaving me tied to a tree,’ he added.
