No fitness certificate for buses without speed governors

In a bid to check road accidents that often claim lives due to rash driving of buses, the state Transport department has decided not to give fitness certificates to buses if speed governors are not installed in the vehicles.

It may be mentioned that racing between two buses on same route is a common scene in the city. Despite of creating awareness of its risks, drivers and conductors hardly bother to drive safely. Instead they race to get more passengers as still conductors and drivers get commission against each passenger.

Though speed governors were installed in 90 per cent of the state government buses, most of the private and mini buses are plying without installing speed governors.

The state Transport department has set December 31 as the deadline for the bus operators to install speed governors in all buses. According to an official of the state Transport department, road accidents due to rash driving of buses will get reduced once speed governors are installed in all the buses.

Thus to check the menace of racing between buses to get more passengers the transport department has decided not to give fitness certificates to buses if speed governors are not set up during inspection.

It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had introduced the state wide campaign of “Safe Drive, Save Life” to check road accidents that had claimed several lives.

The initiative had helped to comparatively reduce the number of road accidents both in the districts and the city. The step of ensuring speed governors in buses would help to further reduce the number of accidents.
