NLC strike: Contract workers submit memorandum to collector

Over 1,000 contract workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation affiliated to seven trade unions staged a demonstration in front of collectorate here on Friday and submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, demanding regularisation of services among other things.

Members of the Joint Action Council of Trade unions of NLC, in their memorandum to Collector Suresh Kumar, demanded bonus, wage hike and an interim wage hike of Rs 25,000 for each of them till their services are regularised.

K Thirumavalavan, leader of DMK led Workers Progressive Union, said the indefinite strike by over
10,000 contract workers, which entered the 10th day on Friday, would continue following the failure of the tripartite talks in Pondicherry yesterday.

He alleged that NLC had declined to accede to any their six point charter of demands AITUC Cuddalore district general secretary A Sekar said the next round of talks would be held on 16 and 17 September in Puducherry.

Meanwhile NLC General Manager N Balaji termed the strike as illegal and alleged that the unions were 'misleading' contract workers. The unions had breached two previous agreements signed in 2008 and 2010, prohibiting them from raising any fresh demands having financial implications till 2015, he said.

If the strike is withdrawn, NLC will consider implementing some of the demands, he said.
