As many as nine people were killed and many others injured in three separate road accidents in the state.
Six persons were killed when a bus lost control and hit the pedestrians near Ilambazar bus stand in Birbhum.
Police said that the victims include four members of a family.
A civic volunteer was also injured in the incident. The incident occurred at around 11 am on Saturday.
Police said that a Bolpur-Langalhata-bound bus carrying passengers to Bolpur from Joydeb Mela.
When the bus was crossing the Ilambazar area, it lost control and hit the pedestrians.
The local people told the police that the bus was running at a high speed and failed to control the vehicle.
The local people took the injured people to a nearby hospital where they were declared brought dead by the doctors.
A taxi driver was also injured when the speeding bus rammed into it.
The local people told the police that the accident took place only because the bus was at a top speed.
Some of the passengers travelling in the bus also received minor injuries. The bus driver and helper
fled the spot immediately after the accident.
Police have seized the vehicle and are conducting raids to nab the bus driver.
In another incident, two persons including a truck driver died when the truck lost control and hit a roadside tree after knocking down a pedestrian.
Two persons were injured in the accident. The victims have been identified as Ganesh Ghosh (43) and Ramesh Ghosh (55).
Ganesh, a farmer by profession was returning home along the National Highway 34 on Friday night when a Malda bound truck crushed him under its wheels.
Ramesh, the truck driver failed to control the truck and the vehicle had hit a road side tree. The driver received critical injury in the incident.
He was rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital where the he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.
In the third incident, a minor boy died after being hit by a speeding truck at Joypur area in Bankura on Friday night triggering tension in the area.
An agitated mob set the truck on fire. Police later brought the situation under control.
Police are conducting raids to nab the truck driver who has been at large since the incident occurred.
