NHRC notice to MP over denial of treatment to two pregnant women
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the MP government over alleged denial of treatment at government hospitals to two pregnant women afflicted with HIV and hepatitis B.
The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports, describing how the two were denied treatment by government hospitals in MP. “The contents of the reports, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights of the victims due to apathetic attitude of the medical staff at the Government hospitals,” the NHRC observed, while issuing a notice to the Secretary, Department of Health, MP, and directing him to get the allegations probed and submit a report within four weeks.
In the first case, a pregnant woman, an HIV-positive patient for the last 8 years, approached the Civil Surgeon, Vidisha, with advice to go to the Hamidiya Hospital, Bhopal, as the hospital at Vidisha did not have facilities to treat HIV-positive patients.
In another case, a pregnant woman was allegedly denied treatment at the District Hospital, Satna, on the ground that she was suffering from hepatitis-B and her condition was serious.
