NHRC issues notice to Noida police on ‘illegal’ detention

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report stating a man was locked up in the Noida sector 58 police station for five days without a formal complaint or an FIR.
NHRC has observed that the contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim and issued notice to deputy inspector general of police, Gautam Budh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh calling for a report in the matter.
The victim reportedly runs a mobile phone shop in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad. He was picked up by police on 28 June at around 3.00 am and kept in the lock-up for five days on allegations that he purchased stolen mobile phones. However, there was no formal complaint or an FIR. He was allegedly thrashed and not provided food timely.
