NHRC issues notice to Civil Aviation Min, AI over techie’s death

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued notices to the Civil Aviation Ministry and Air India over reports of a technician’s death at the Mumbai Airport.

The Commission has issued notice to the Secretary, Civil Aviation Ministry and Chairman of Air India after taking suo motu cognizance of media reports that an Air India ground staffer Ravi Subramanian died after he was sucked into the engine of an aircraft at Mumbai Airport on December 16. They have been given two weeks to respond.

“The safety and security of both technical and non-technical staff are of great concern. Though the incident is pictured as an accident, reports in the press are otherwise. Right to life guaranteed under the Constitution of India would include Right to Safety as well,” observed Justice D Murugesan, Member of NHRC, while issuing the notices.
