New Year. New Resolutions.

On 1 January 2014, many of us pulled out this infamous list from our pockets, purses and pillows, and made a commitment to accomplish the 10 out of ‘10 things I am going to do this year’.  On 2 January 2014, we look at the list again and rethink the number 10 and tell ourselves, ‘I know I can definitely accomplish nine of these things for sure’.  By the end of the first week, we are down to six out of 10. By the end of the month (or is that too long?), the list is nowhere to be seen.

A definite ‘things to do’ item that appears on every list across the different cultures and cities around the world is, ‘I want to travel more’.  Let’s be realistic when writing this resolution down.

With our busy lives, information absorbed children and the continuous competition to win the rat race, putting down ‘I want to travel three times this year’ may be as unrealistic as it gets. I made a resolution when 1999 was creating a hissy fit of an end and what the world called Y2K! My list had only one resolution and that was ‘I want to explore one new place every year for the rest of my life’.

Today, 13 years later, I have seen at least 13 new places (in some years I got lucky and saw more than once place). 2013 opened up its backyard to me – the conservancies of Kenya.  I explored four completely different landscapes within Kenya for the first time (even though I have lived here for as long as I could remember).

So take out that list, and put one resolution on it, ‘I want to visit Kenya this year’.  It is as simple as that. A taste of Kenya is a taste of magic.
