New Town to host three-day national poetry festival this month

A three day national poetry festival, the first of its kind will be held at Swapna Bhor in New town in December.

The festival will be organized by Boi Mela Committee in collaboration with Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) and New Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA).

It may be mentioned that the state government has set up a poetry academy with Subodh Sarkar as its head.

Three major cultural event of New Town, namely, New Town mela, New Town boi mela and the 
national poetry festival will be held between December 23 and 24.

An MoU has been signed between WBHIDCO, NKDA and Boi Mela Committee. Asit Chatterjee, joint secretary, Urban Development department, Anup Matilal, curator, Rabindra Tirtha and Prasanta Maji, administrator Swapna Bhor will be government nominees. This was decided at a high level meeting presided over by the chairman WBHIDCO Debashis Sen on Sunday.

The New Town mela will be held at the mela ground situated near Rabindra Tirtha. A special pedestrian entry and a bus stop near the main gate is being arranged by WBHIDCO. The mela will showcase cultural functions which were held by different puja committees.

The Boi mela which is held in February has been brought forward to synergize the mela so that more people could come and participate. The boi mela will be held at Swapna Bhor, the senior citizen’s park.

New Town is coming up as the new cultural hub. Regular cultural programmes are held at Rabindra Tirtha, Nazrul Tirtha and Swapna Bhor. Because of the distance, many people living in Salt lake and New Town could not attend cultural programmes in Rabindra Sadan complex which has been the main cultural hub in the city.

The cultural programmes include drama, film shows and other shows at Rabindra Tirtha and Nazrul Tirtha.
