Need to boost force’s morale, says Police Commissioner

Stating that there is a need to boost up the morale of the force, Commissioner of the Kolkata Police Rajeev Kumar on Wednesday asked the rank and file to take immediate and stringent action if any policemen are attacked.

Kumar held a meeting with the officers-in-charges (OC) and additional officers-in-charge (AOCs) of all the police stations in the city at the Police Training School for an hour from 11 am. It may be mentioned that there had been series of incidents in which police were manhandled in different parts of the city. Sources said that it is intolerable that a policeman, who is in charge of assuring security of common people, gets beaten up. Necessary and immediate action should be taken against those who attack an on-duty policeman. He said that the police is a disciplined force and its members know how to tackle a situation. It is learnt that he also said that steps are required to beef up the security in the city at night. He gave guidelines to the OCs and AOCs that to be followed to ensure safety of the citizens at night. He also raised the issue of security of elderly people in the city. There had been some incidents in which lone elderly people were killed in and around the city. He directed the local police stations to take necessary steps immediately after an incident to arrest the accused instead of waiting for the detective department to visit the spot and initiate a probe. Usually, officers from the city police detective department reach a spot only after the police officers from local police station. Thus it is will be good if officers from local police station make a move to arrest the accused soon after getting the information, sources said. Kumar also held a meeting with the officers of the traffic department said to take necessary steps to improve the traffic movement.
