NDMC waives off tax penalties

North Delhi Delhi Municipal Corporation on Monday waived off penalties on property tax defaulters amounting over crores of rupees.

The corporation also announced the launch of a discount scheme on interest from Thursday for property tax defaulters  in its area which is being seen as a pre-poll soap by ruling BJP and is likely to be followed by South DMC and East DMC.

‘We have decided to waive off the penalties for not depositing property tax on time, if the property owner deposits the requisite tax before 31 March 2014,’ said Ram Kishan Singhal, chairman of the NDMC standing committee.

He also directed the department to bring more properties under the tax net to increase revenue. ‘If the department realises the entire potential of property tax we can increase our revenue manifold and even bring down the tax rate to provide relief to honest taxpayers,’ added Singhal. He also said that if the property tax department achieves the target, the tax for the year 2014-15 will be decreased.
