NDMC to repaint kerbs, dividers in black & yellow

Road dividers and kerbs in areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council will soon revert to its traditional look with the civic body deciding to repaint them in black and yellow colours.

The move comes after Delhi Traffic Police last week requested NDMC to go back to the conventional, high-visibility colour scheme of white, black and yellow instead of the pink and green combination whose introduction last year had triggered a hue and cry.

“The council, in principle, has agreed to revert to the conventional yellow and black or white and black colours. A committee has been formed to look into the issue. It will further assess the matter and give its proposal at the earliest considering it is a matter of public safety,” a senior NDMC official said.

NDMC had decided to paint kerbs and roundabouts in pink and green in October last year. The move, which was termed an “aesthetic initiative” by the civic body, was criticised for not considering vehicular safety in a city where visibility becomes a huge challenge, especially on foggy winter days.

Traffic officials claimed they had objected to the change in the colour scheme as the purpose of the paint should be to reflect light and make the dividers visible.

NDMC had thereafter used reflector strips which, however, did not serve the purpose as they started coming off after a few days.
