NDMC suspends 17 officials for taking bribe

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has suspended 17 officials for allegedly accepting bribe from a construction contractor. An anti-corruption NGO had reportedly video-taped the officials accepting money. The NGO sent the CD of videographical evidence to the vigilance department of NDMC. ‘We received a CD on 28 June and after watching it we immediately sent a report to the higher authority. The chairman ordered their suspension on the spot,’ said a senior officer in vigilance department requesting anonymity.

All the officials suspended are part of civil engineering department. Among them six are group D class of employees. The council has ordered a departmental inquiry in the matter before arriving at any further decisions. ‘Suspension is no punishment. The officials have been suspended as a precautionary measure. We will wait for the report to come before taking any further action,’ informed the officer.

Though the content of the CD are not in public domain yet, sources have informed that the concerned work for which the officials were allegedly accepting money dates back to 2012-13.
‘We will look at all possible angles. We are also probing the genuinity of the CD as the concerned matter shown in the video is around two years old’, the officer added.
