Train services suspended again in Kashmir for security reasons

Srinagar: Train services were again suspended on Sunday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike on the death anniversary of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, founder of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

Bhat was hanged and later buried in Delhi's Tihar jail on this day in 1984.

'We have again suspended train services in the Kashmir valley on receiving a fresh advisory from police last night,' a railway official told UNI this morning.

He said there will be no train service between Badgam-Srinagar to Anantnag, Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region. Similarly no train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam to Baramulla in north Kashmir, he added.

Train service in the valley was suspended on Friday on the fifth death anniversary of Parliament convict Afzal Guru, who was also hanged and later buried in Delhi's Tihar jail on February 9, 2013. However, all trains ran as per schedule yesterday.

This is 12th time the train service has been suspended in the Kashmir valley partially or fully during this year so far. Last year, the train service was suspended for more than 50 times, fully or partially, for security reasons.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), consisting of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik, have called for a strike today in the valley.

Railway spokesman said railway authorities are acting on the advice of police and administration. 'We have no role in it for security reasons,' he said. However, he admitted it is the passengers who are facing difficulties when the train service remained suspended.
