Top CID officer arrested for revealing info

The Assam Police has arrested a top CID officer, heading the SIT probe into the Silpathar AASU office attack, after suspending him on the charge of revealing crucial information about the ongoing investigation.

CID Senior Superintendent of Police N Rajamarthandan was arrested at midnight and was today produced before the court, which remanded him to two-day police custody, Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Chandra Nath said.

"We arrested him on Thursday night at 12. On Friday, we produced him in the court and we received two days of remand," he said.

The SSP was the CID's Public Information Officer and was heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the Silapathar case.

The office of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) at Silpathar in the state's Dhemaji district was attacked by a fringe group, Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samanway Samitee (NIBBUSS), on March 6 and Rajamarthandan had allegedly disclosed crucial information about the investigations.

"We have collected sufficient evidence from Rajamarthandan. To some of the queries he could not give satisfactory replies to the Investigating Officer. So we needed his custody for further interrogation," Nath said.
