Prez extends tenure of Modi as chancellor of Visva-Bharati for 3 yrs

New Delhi: Even as Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrives at Shantiniketan on Friday to attend the annual convocation of the Visva-Bharati University and to inaugurate Bangladesh Bhavan, President Ramnath Kovind has extended the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Chancellor of the university for another three years on Friday last week.
Prime Minister Modi's term as Chancellor ended last month.
Only a few weeks ago that the Executive Council of the Visva-Bharati University had recommended Prime Minister's name as chancellor of the university for next three years. The President of India has accepted the recommendation last Friday. Now, Prime Minister Modi will be the Chancellor of the university till 2021.
In 2015, former Prime Minister Dr. Monmahon Singh had resigned as Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University. After that PM Modi was appointed as Chancellor of the University. However, after his appointment, he never came to Shantiniketan to attend any programme. Now, he has agreed to address the convocation of the University where Prime Minister of Bangladesh would also be present.
Both Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Dr. Monmahan Singh came to Shantiniketan to attend the convocation of the university.
Earlier, it was reported that after the inauguration of the Bangladesh Bhavan in the campus of the university both the Prime Ministers will have a bilateral meeting over lunch in the newly built Bhavan. The Bangladesh Government has contributed 25 crore taka for the construction of the building.
Next day Prime Minister Hasina will attend the annual convocation of the Kazi Nazrul Islam University where she will be conferred honourary D.Litt by West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi, who is chancellor of the university. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would be the chief guest of the convocation.
