Hold nationwide GST awareness camps, Centre orders ministers

The Centre has asked its ministers to organise and participate in GST awareness programme across the country from July 2 to 7.

Government sources said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given this new task to his busy ministers to visit different places in the country as per their choice and hold GST awareness campaign for the common people.

The Cabinet ministers are already visiting different states for "Deen Dayal Vistar Yojana" to mark the three years of the BJP-NDA government. Political analysts feel that the incumbent government is not ready to give its predecessor UPA the credit for introducing GST and thus has planned for the outreach programme.

The new GST rates will be rolled out from July 1 with slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Earlier, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia had confirmed about the awareness campaign.

Even the government has already initiated its media 'Blitzkrieg' to make the common man aware as to how the upcoming GST regime will reduce prices of most goods.

Earlier, the PM reviewed the status of preparedness for the implementation of GST earlier this month.

At that time, the Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha asked all the ministries to form GST Facilitation Cells to assist businesses for a smooth transition to the new indirect tax regime from July 1.
