Swachh Survekshan 2017: Indore ranked India's cleanest city, Gujarat named the cleanest state

Indore replaces Mysuru as India's cleanest city. Uttar Pradesh is the country's dirtiest state but Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Varanasi constituency has shown a dramatic improvement.

Madhya Pradesh on Thursday scored some brownie points as Indore and Bhopal featured on the top two spots of India's cleanest cities.

The list was based on a massive survey, Swachh Survekshan 2017, rating the cleanliness efforts put in by the municipalities in 500 Indian cities.

Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday released the Swachh Survekshan 2017 report which had the Swachh Bharat rankings of 434 cities based on their level of cleanliness.

"Survey results are very encouraging. Revealed major improvement in cleanliness in last one year. Swachh Bharat buzz is reflecting on ground," Naidu said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Madhya Pradesh's capital — Bhopal — came second. Mysuru, which had topped the list in 2016, came fifth this year. State-wise, Gujarat has the highest number, with 12 of its cities among the top 50 clean cities followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11 and Andhra Pradesh with eight. Union Territory Chandigarh, which had stood second last year, slipped to the eleventh position this year.

The Ministry of Urban Development had claimed that more than 80 percent of the 18 lakh people surveyed across 434 towns and cities had given a positive response to the impact of Swachh Bharat Mission.

On Tuesday, the ministry, in a statement, said 83 percent of respondents to the Swachh Survekshan 2017 report had said that their localities were cleaner than the previous year and almost 82 percent found an improvement in sanitation infrastructure and garbage collection. It added that 80 percent of the respondents said they had better access to community and public toilets.

The Quality Council of India deployed 421 assessors for on the spot assessment of 17,500 locations in 434 cities and towns. Apart from this, 55 persons were appointed to regularly monitor the survey process in real time.
