I should be reinstated with due honour: Kafeel Khan

New Delhi: A day after getting a clean chit in connection with the Gorakhpur's BRD hospital tragedy, suspended paediatrician Kafeel Khan on Saturday demanded that should be reinstated with due honour as has been absolved of charges of medical negligence and corruption in the BRD hospital incident.

Talking to reporters, Kafeel reiterated that the Uttar Pradesh government should apologise to the families of the children who died and provide compensation to the kin.

"The departmental inquiry has shown that I did not do any medical negligence or indulge in any corruption... That tag of 'murderer Kafeel' and infamous doctor Kafeel is off my head now," he said.

"I demand that I should be reinstated in my job with due honour and a CBI inquiry should be conducted into the case," he said.

Kafeel was suspended two years ago on the charges of corruption, medical negligence and not performing his duty to his fullest on the day when over 60 children had lost their lives at the BRD hospital due to the shortage of oxygen. Kafeel also remained in jail for nine months for a crime that he had not committed.

The report was handed over to him on Thursday by BRD officials. It states that Kafeel was not the nodal officer of the encephalitis ward when the incident occurred and that despite being on leave, he did to the best of his abilities to save lives by arranging 500 jumbo oxygen cylinders in his personal capacity.

While talking to Millennium Post, Kafeel said, "It's a great relief for me in particular and whole doctors' fraternity in general. I'm afraid that I may be suspended again as the report has not gone well with the UP government."

Talking about the UP government's latest statement, Kafeel said, "As the government is stunned by the findings of the report, it has brought an old case into the discussion. This move of the government would also be nullified."
