Govt showcases scientific innovations in Parliament

In a bid to give a push to research and development, the government has organised an exhibition to showcase scientific innovations in the field of healthcare, defence, aviation, food industry, etc. The show, which has been organised at Parliament complex, was inaugurated by Vice President Hamid Ansari in presence of Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

While opening the show, Ansari said that India still imports 60% of its defence requirement and has not been able to develop a proper rifle for its armed forces. As the country devotes only 0.9% its GDP for scientific research, compared to 2% by China and 2.8 and 4.6% by Germany and Israel respectively, the remarks made by Ansari may prove to be an eye-opener for scientists.
Products such as kheer scanner, anti-diabetic ayurvedic drug BGR-34, water purifier that runs without electricity, vaccines developed by biotechnology department are on display at the exhibition, organised by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).
