Ex-Cong min joins BJP in HP

Shimla: Within a week after three-time Hamirpur MP joining the Congress, it was BJP's turn to give a jolt to the Congress at Rampur - the home town of six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Former Congress minister and Dalit leader Singhi Ram, an estranged loyalist of Virbhadra Singh, joined the BJP in presence of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who was campaigning at Rampur.

Virbhadra reacted to ridicule him, saying "How does it make any difference on Singhi Ram joining BJP? He has no base there."

Rampur is part of Mandi Parliamentary constituency, which more or less had been voting block for the Congress in most Lok Sabha elections.

Singhi Ram had represented Rampur for six times before he was denied ticket at the behest of Virbhadra Singh in 2007 assembly polls.

In 2017 poll, Singhi Ram has contested Rampur assembly constituency as independent but lost to his Congress successor Nand Lal, who is Virbhadra Singh's staunch lieutenant.
