EVMs fitted with VVPAT in Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll

Gurdaspur: The Election Commission will use electronic voting machines fitted with voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) system in the October 11 Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll in Punjab.
The VVPAT system will be used for the first time in this border district of Punjab.
Gurdaspur District Electoral Officer Gurloveleen Singh Sidhu said the VVPAT system would be used in all assembly segments in the parliamentary constituency -- Dina Nagar, Gurdaspur, Dera Baba Nanak, Fatehgarh Churian, Batala, Qadian, Pathankot, Sujanpur and Bhoa.
VVPAT generates a receipt and allow people to verify if the vote went in favour of the candidate against whose name the button was pressed on the electronic voting machine (EVM).
During the 2017 Punjab assembly polls, the Election Commission had ordered re-polling in some of the polling stations after the malfunctioning in VVPAT system.
The Election Commission has set up 1,781 polling stations for the Lok Sabha bypoll, necessitated following the death of BJP MP Vinod Khanna in April this year.
Total 15,17,436 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise on October 11. The counting will take place on October 15.
