CBI conducts 'surprise check' at Bhartia residence

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation conducted a joint surprise check in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, at the residence of Delhi-based industrialist

Hari S Bhartia in the

posh Amrita Shergill Marg locality.

The country's premier investigative agency was assisted by vigilance and enforcement officials from the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Central Public Works Department in their search, according to sources here.

It is within the powers of CBI to conduct such checks to verify whether matters require a full-blown investigation, if they are based on certain specific inputs, official sources told the Millennium Post. The checking was conducted after the federal agency

received a tip-off about alleged unauthorised construction, they claimed.

Brother-in-law of the former UPA-nominated Rajya Sabha MP and Editorial Director of HT Media Shobhana Bhartia, Hari is the co-founder of Jubilant Bhartia Group,

currently valued at around USD 5 billion, with his brother Shyam.

Hari is the Co-chairperson of the group and had previously held the position of President of Confederation of Indian Industry, a non-government industry body.

With the 2019 polls knocking on the door, this joint "check" by CBI based on information about alleged

unauthorised construction comes as a surprise move by the agency.
