Bihar reports 354 Covid-19 suspects, none positive yet

New Delhi: As many as 354 suspected cases of Coronavirus infection have been identified in Bihar, of which 113 patients were released from isolation after 14-day quarantine. No confirmed positive case has been reported so far in the eastern state.

A Health Department official said on Thursday that from January 15 to March 18, 354 persons returned from Covid-19 infected countries to Bihar and were placed under surveillance immediately.

While talking to Millennium Post, Manoj Kumar, who is executive director of State Health Society Bihar, said, "We have tested 74 suspected cases on Thursday and the number may increase by the end of the day."

On being asked about the new suspect cases in Barh, a subdivision under Patna district, Kumar said, "Eight members of a family and five neighbours have been quarantined. Till now, their results are not positive." However, he refused to comment on some suspected cases in Biharsharif. In a related query on shortage of masks for doctors and healthcare works, he said, "There is a shortage of masks in the country, but we have provided masks to all doctors and paramedical staff treating Covid-19 patients."

Another Bihar Health Ministry official said that people arriving at the Patna and Gaya airports were made to undergo thermal screening and so far, more than 19,000 passengers have been screened at both airports.

According to the department, people coming from Nepal were being monitored and screened at 49 places in seven districts of Bihar adjoining Nepal. "As of now more than 2 lakh people have been screened at these places, but not a single positive case has been reported," the official said.

On Wednesday, the state health department had ordered for the closure of shopping malls, gyms, swimming pools and spas in all districts of Bihar till March 31.
