KHANDALA: At least 18 people were killed and 15 others injured in a major accident on Pune-Satara Highway on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place at around 4:30 am near Khambatki ghat section on Mumbai- Bangalore highway in Satara district, when a tempo carrying about 35 workers toppled after hitting a barricade.
All the deceased were workers from Karnataka, and they were travelling at a construction site in Pune when the mishap took place in the wee hours. Among those who died on the spot include four women and a child.
Sandeep Patil, Superintendent of police of Satara said, "The mishap has taken place at around 4.30 am after the truck crossed Khambatki Ghat section. There is difficult 'S' shape turning after the ghat section, and we suspect that the driver was dozing off due to which he could not control the truck on a problematic turning, and it hit the fencing wall."
