Nancy Powell meets Modi, ends nine-year US boycott

Her meeting with Modi, who is Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate, is important ahead of the upcoming general election and also after a nine-year US boycott of the Gujarat CM. BJP is running ahead of the incumbent Congress in the opinion polls.

The meeting lasted for an hour and Powell left without revealing the outcome of the discussion to media persons waiting outside the residence.‘They have discussed strengthening business and economic relations between India and US,’ a party source said.

In 2005, United States had revoked visa for Modi under a domestic law that bars entry by any foreign official seen as responsible for ‘severe violations of religious freedom’. However, with Modi managing to come clean of the charges and emerging as a business-savvy leader and principal opposition’s PM candfidate, the US has been ‘suitably impressed ‘to shun old bitterness’. Powell first gave indications of this on 10 February expressing her desire to meet Modi and sought permission from the South Block.
