Najeeb Jung takes over as Lt Governor of capital

Former IAS officer Najeeb Jung took over as the new Lieutenant-Governor of the national capital on Tuesday.  Jung, former vice-chancellor (V-C) of Jamia Millia Islamia University, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by acting chief iustice of Delhi high court B D Ahmed at a function at Raj Niwas, which was attended by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, her ministerial colleagues and the top brass of Delhi government and police.

Jung’s predecessor Tejender Khanna, however, skipped the ceremony. As Lieutenant-General, Jung will be the administrative head of the Delhi government and in-charge of Delhi police and the Delhi Development Authority. Jung (62), a 1973-bacth IAS officer, is the 19th Lt Governor of the city. Earlier,  Jung had said that as the capital Li General, he would concentrate on improving the law and order situation in the city and ensuring better security for women in Delhi.

During his tenure as V-C of Jamia, the university had become a training centre for athletes participating in the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. He has worked in the energy sector and had been associated with the Asian Development Bank and the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Oxford University, before he was called to head Jamia Millia Islamia.  He has headed or been member to numerous committees appointed by the government.
