N Korea slams Obama over internet policy

North Korea blasted US President Barack Obama on Sunday as a “loser” and said that attempts to break the country through an influx of information would fail.

“[Obama] even talked rubbish that over time [the] Internet will find its way to North Korea and the flow of information into it will bring about a change, asserting that they keep exploring ways of speeding up the change,” said a statement from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry.

“After a series of defeats in its military attempts to stifle the DPRK [the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the official name for North Korea], the US has now turned to [the] Internet to undermine the DPRK through the ‘influx of information.’ It is, however, gravely mistaken if it thinks it can break the single-minded unity of the DPRK, which it failed to do with sanctions and pressure, with Internet,” the statement continued.

The Ministry said that it was responding to comments made by Obama on January 22 in an interview on YouTube, in which he suggested that the Internet may be more effective at bringing down the North Korean regime than either sanctions or military options. “We will keep on ratcheting the pressure, but part of what’s happening is … the Internet over time is going to be penetrating this country. Over time you will see a regime like this collapse,” said Obama.

“Information ends up seeping in over time and bringing about change. That’s something that we are constantly looking for ways to accelerate.”
