Myanmar president meets Aung San Suu Kyi

Myanmar President U Thein Sein had a special meeting with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, a media report said.

It was the first meeting between the president and the chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in a year since March 9, 2014.

The bilateral meeting focused on the issues of constitution amendment and upcoming general election, Xinhua news agency reported citing an evening news broadcast of state radio and TV.

Myanmar’s parliament, in January, re-proposed to President U Thein Sein to hold six-party talks as soon as possible to work out a framework for constitution amendment.

The parliament’s important motion was put forward on November 25 last year which called for a six-party talks involving the president, the defence chief, Aung San Suu Kyi, both speakers of the lower and upper houses of parliament and one ethnic representative.
