Musical note of a tribute
Paying a tribute to the legendary Dhrupad singer PadmaShree Late Pandit Siyaram Tiwari of Darbhanga Gharana,  Pandit Siyaram Tiwari Memorial Sangeet Trust organised the first Dhrupad Sabha on 23 August at India Habitat Centre in the Capital.

On the occasion, the trust announced two awards - Yuva and Varishth KalakarSanman which were bestowed to Sangeet Kumar Pathak (Pakhawaj Vadan) and Pt. Abhay Narayan Mallick (Dhrupad Gayan) respectively.

The stage opened with Pakhawaj recital by Sangeet Kumar Pathak, son and disciple of Mridangacharya Late Pt. Ramashish Pathak. He rightly chose to play choutaal, and embellished his playing with rare parans and relas.

Following was a Dhrupad recital by Pt. Abhay Narayan Mallick who is the senior most Dhrupad exponent of Darbhanga Gharana. A recipient of numerous prestigious Mallick lived up to the expectations of the audiences as he started his recital by Alaap in Raga Abhogi Kanhra followed by a Bhakti Rasa composition, CharananVandanakaru Re Mann set to chautaal.  He mesmerised the music lovers with his accurate swaras, and use of meend and gamak in his gayaki.

As the evening came to an end, it witnessed a unique and electrifying violin recital by renowned maestro Pt. Santosh Kumar Nahar accompanied by Pt. Ravishankar Upadhyay. Staying true to the spirit of the Dhrupad Sabha, Pandit ji presented raga Yaman in Dhrupad ang. He concluded the evening by presenting a Thumari Mishra Pilu set to KeharwaTaal .

Sumeet Anand Pandey, Secretary, Pandit Siyaram Tiwari Memorial Sangeet Trust,  announced that Dhrupad Sabha will be a biannual Dhrupad Festival and will be held next in March 2015.
