Music as slow poison

They are a part of a childhood dream that they turned into reality, Cyanide is a band that has remained strong for the past decade and will be celebrating their 10 year circuit completion on 12 March. Here's what Rohan Soloman, lead vocalist, has to say regarding their journey and more...

How did the band get together?

The band was formed back when we were in school itself. One thing led to another and we decided on the name Cyanide. Initially nobody had any idea about what kind of music to play and we used to cover Bryan Adams, Guns and Roses, The Eagles... And then I got into composing and we started playing our songs. Down the road now we have 2 EPs , 1 album and are currently working on another album.

What is the hardest thing about a band?

Well..band members leaving is tough for us. There was a time when I wanted to stop because of this. But then there's something exhilarating about performing in front of a crowd or composing in studio, that you just can't let go of it. Any hard part that comes is nothing compared to when you see your music being appreciated.

How do you compose a song?

Usually how it would work is- I'd create a basic song structure and get a feedback from my band members and then after that everybody puts in their own element. We are very open about criticism.

Who are your idols?

All through my life, I've mainly related with bands that do a lot of vocal harmony. Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys, The Eagles, Metallica, Chris Daughtry, Maroon 5, Norah Jones- so yes I've a lot of different influences.

How do you feel about music control and music censorship?

See, we are a band who has a small fan base of roughly 25000 people. We actually put up our album for free. We are not Metallica who make money out of their music. For us, internet is a way of popularizing our music.

Best performance till date?

We've had a lot of good shows but if I have to name the best, it would be Channel [V] Launchpad where we played in front of 10,000 people. It was raining cats and dogs but still the audience were there, all wet but still in the spirit, all dancing and jumping. So yeah that would be the best one.

Studio recording or live performance?

They both have their charm. Studio is about perfection where you do it again and again till you get it right. While live performance is all about connection-how you connect with the audience.

How do you guys feel about being an English band in India

Well, we are a minority in minority itself. First its English language and then its Alternative Rock. So you have to have an alternate career as well. But then at the end of the day if you're doing something that you love, you work through these obstacles and enjoy yourself.

What will you be performing in Delhi?

We'll be playing our songs that’s for sure. We have 23 songs lined up....lets see how it goes by.

Message for your fans

Thank You so much for your love and support and we hope that you keep appreciating our music and be there for us. And hope to see you all on 12 March!
