Murshidabad OIC injured in cultural programme clash

The Officer-in-Charge of Bharatpur police station in Murshidabad and four civic volunteers were injured when a mob pelted stones at them following a clash that broke out between the police and some local people who attended a cultural programme organised by a local club on Tuesday night.

The incident had triggered tension in the area. The police officer received injuries on his head and is undergoing treatment.

Tension escalated when some local people who congregated at the area to watch the programme engaged in altercation with some of the civic volunteers.

It was learnt that a civic volunteer went on the stage to take photographs of the programme when some of the spectators objected to the incident.

The local people also repeatedly asked him to get down from the stage but he refused.

Police said that the mob threw dust in the eyes of the civic volunteer and a chaos broke out in the area. Other civic volunteers rushed to the spot after seeing the incident and tried to rescue the victim.

Some of them wanted to know from the local people why they had behaved in this manner. A hot altercation broke out between the people and the civic volunteers following the incident. The mob started heckling the volunteers and also injured them by throwing stones on them.

After being informed, the Officer-in-Charge Swarup Biswas reached the spot and intervened into the incident. The local people also engaged in altercation with the OIC when some pelted stones on him resulting in severe injuries on his head. Four civic volunteers who tried to save the OIC also received injuries in the process.

Local people have alleged that the police had attacked some local residents and damaged their house to take a revenge of the incident. Police denied the allegation by saying that those are baseless allegations. They said some of the local people were in inebriated states and created trouble.

A senior police officer in the district said that the officer-in-charge has been under medication as he received some injuries. Police have arrested some people for creating trouble in the area. Police have started a detailed probe into the incident.
