Mountaineering expedition on motorcycles for promoting road safety to be flagged off on Aug 10

The state Power Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay and state transport minister Suvendu Adhikary will flag off the expedition at a function in the city.

This is for the first time when motorcycle expedition to Rupsu valley in Ladakh, situated at a height of 21,500 feet will be held.

The bikers will carry the Biswa Bangla logo and install the flags of Biswa Bangla, Indian National flag, the flag of North Kolkata Disha, the club to which the bikers belong and the flag of Mohun Bagan, the national club of which the bikers are supporters.

The six bikers are Subrata Boral, Santanu Roychowdhury, Indradeb Chatterjee, Manas Sen, Srikrishna Biswas and Achinta Saha. Of them Boral and Roychowdhury are trained mountaineers and experts in disaster management. The expedition has been sponsored by TVS and state government. The TVS has given four Apache RTR 200cc motor cycles and the attire that is required for the expedition.

Boral, the leader of the team and a trained mountaineer, said the aim of this expedition was to popularise the Chief Minister’s message of safe drive save life.

“It needs tremendous patience, concentration and physical fitness to go for an expedition on motorcycles. Whether in cities or on longer trips one must drive safely to save lives of others 
as well as themselves. We want to create awareness and popularize the slogan of our beloved Chief Minister,” he said adding “It has always been man’s quest to know the unknown and the beauty of the mountains has attracted mountaineers for many years.”

Boral said this is for the first time in the history of motorcycle expedition, when the bikers would go to a place situated at 21,500 feet. He said: “It will be a completely new experience and is test of our nerves and physical fitness.”

After the flagging off ceremony, the two wheelers will be ferried to Chandigarh by train. On August 15 the bikers will leave for Manali to Korzok via Rotang pass, Kelong and Darcha.

The base camp of the expedition will be Kyrchu. The month-long expedition will be completed on September 9. North Kolkata Disha, a motor cycle club in North Kolkata has been organising adventure biking since 1994.
