Mother, son duo crushed under truck in Rajarhat

A woman and her five-year-old son came under the wheel of a speeding truck at Rajarhat on Sunday afternoon and died. Locals, infuriated by the incident, ransacked the vehicle and blocked the road.

The locals have alleged that the reckless truck hit the rickshaw in which the mother-son duo was on while going towards their home.

The mother-son duo, Abira Biwi (27) and Sowan Ali (5) were taken to the Rekjoyani Primary Health Centre, but the doctors there could not able to save their lives.

“The incident happened in Rajarhat’s Rekjoyani area when the truck was backing up and the driver could not see the rickshaw coming from behind. The mother-son duo fell into the road and the rear wheel of the truck crushed them there,” said a police officer.

The locals have, however, alleged that the truck which was standing in front of a construction site developed by a local syndicate leader, had faulty-brakes. The driver knew that the vehicle was not easy to drive.

The developer allegedly has compelled the driver to drive the truck with faulty-brakes as it would have taken several thousands to repair it.

“The same truck had hit a wall and broke it a few days ago. The locals have rushed to the spot and
have detained the driver. He was taken to a local club and was cautioned. He had informed us that the brakes of the truck, was not okay,” said a local resident.

However, the locals have ransacked the truck and barged into the construction site. They broke the glow-signboard there and advertisement of the realty development company right away.

The infuriated mob then rushed to the building and hurled stone to break the window-pane there. The driver of the errant truck has gone at large as the police team have started raids to book him as quick as possible.

The developer, however, was asked to come to the local police station. “We will grill the developer. He did not repair the truck and it was not safe to run on the road,” said an investigating officer.

“The woman, Abira was returning to her in-laws house from her parent’s house. She tried her best to rescue her child by pulling the boy out from the danger. But she could not succeed.

“The body of the five-year-old child was severely bruised. His mother received injuries in head. Both have succumbed to their respective injuries. The bodies have been sent to autopsy,” said the police officer.
