Mother kills her 7-day-old baby girl, throws her in well

In a tragic incident, a mother killed her 7 days old baby girl by throwing her in a well near her in-laws’ house on the day she was discharged from the hospital.

The incident that occurred at Patpur village in Bankura on late Sunday night triggered tension in the area. Police have already arrested the woman. As per the preliminary investigation, police found that the woman was suffering from mental depression.

Police said that the accused Mridula Ghoshal had failed to deliver babies on two previous occasions. The woman, originally a resident of Taldangra, got married to Debikanta Ghoshal, a private company employee from Patpur village in Bankura in 2013. Since her marriage she had two miscarriages. On 13 November, she gave birth to a girl child at Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital where she was admitted by her family members. Last Sunday she was discharged from the hospital along with her baby. The woman and her baby returned home soon after their release from the hospital.

The woman accompanied by the new born slept with her mother-in-law on Sunday night. A little after midnight, the family members heard that the woman was screaming and beating her chest. When they asked her of the issue, she told them the baby is lying dead in the well situated close to the house.

When they asked her how the baby fell in the well, she failed to provide a convincing answer. As there was incoherence in her statement the family members called their neighbours. After hearing the family members, the local people took the matter to the local police station.

Police along with the fire brigade personnels rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the new born baby. They baby was sent for the post mortem examinations. Police, in the interrogation, came to know that the victim was suffering from mental depression for quite a long time. They have started a probe into the incident. Police are also investigating if there is any other angle into the incident.
