More than 50 CPI(M) workers from Howrah cross over to TMC

More than 50 CPI(M) workers led by their senior leader from Pilkhana in Howrah Md Mehmood joined Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

The move by their leader and workers just a few days ahead of the Assembly elections had left the CPI(M) leadership in the district in a embarrassing situation.

The erosion took place when the district leadership had been claiming that the party’s position is better compared to that of as in 2011.

In a programme organised by Trinamool Congress in ward number 13 of the Howrah Municipal Corporation at Pilkhana on Saturday evening, Trinamool Congress MP from Howrah Prasun Banerjee handed over a flag of the party to Mehmood.

The sitting MLA from Howrah North Assembly constituency Ashok Ghosh and the party’s candidate Laxmi Ratan Shukla were also present in the meeting.

It may be mentioned that at present there are Trinamool Congress councillors in 62 out of 66 wards in Howrah Municipal Corporation. Two seats each were bagged by BJP and CPI(M). BJP’s Githa Rai had won in the corporation election in ward number 13 from where Md Mehmood joined Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

With the joining of so many CPI(M) workers in the party, Trinamool Congress leaders expect that it will help them to perform better from the ward as well.

Sources said that Mehmood was in contact with Trinamool Congress for the past few months and finally he joined the party ahead of the Assembly elections.

In the programme, Ghosh said the people have witnessed the development work that took place all over after the change of guard in the state.

North Howrah, which was earlier known for traffic congestion, poorly illuminated and potholes full of roads, has got a new look.

The problem of traffic congestion on the narrow GT Road has been solved properly after the formation of a separate police commissionerate in Howrah.

“Steps were taken to assure safety and security of people. Now people can return home safely at late night.

“Work of development continues and the new government will take all necessary steps for further development of the area,” he said.

Hundreds of people gathered in the programme. Supporters of the political party from different parts of North Howrah and Bally were found attending the rally.

Stating that he heard on Sunday morning that Md Mehmood joined Trinamool Congress but he was not yet in a position to explain the reason behind this. The leader only said: “Rezzak Mollah has also joined Trinamool Congress.”
