Monsoon woes: Cement shortage halts repair work

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) doesn’t have enough cement to carry out repair work during the monsoon season it has emerged. It has therefore borrowed 5,000 from East DMC.
‘We have borrowed 5,000 packets of cement from EDMC because maintenance work was adversely being affected due to lack of cement,’ said Ravinder Gupta, chairman of the works committee in NDMC.

He said the corporation has ordered the supplier to provide 60,000 packets of cements. ‘I had written to the officers to provide stock as a part of pre-monsoon preparation but they waited till the stock was exhausted completely. We had no option but to approach EDMC,’ Gupta added.

Maintenance work was on halt since the last 15 days due to the lack of cement. ‘There are several drains, cement roads of colonies which are waiting for repair,’ Gupta added. The officers of the corporation blame the crisis on the trifurcation of erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

‘All the cement godowns of the erstwhile MCD went in the area of EDMC and SDMC,’ said Mayank Sharma, additional commissioner of NDMC.

He added that a 50,000 sq m land has been identified in the Civil Lines zones to construct a new godown. Untill then, EDMC has permitted NDMC to use its facility.
