‘Modi’s pathetic track record does not support his vision’

Ramesh alleged that the situation on these issues is ‘pathetic’ in Gujarat. ‘In his (Modi) so-called vision speech, he spoke about the great importance he places on ‘women empowerment and importance of girl child’. The record of Gujarat in this area is, to put in mildly, pathetic, especially given its level of economic development,’ he said.

He claimed that as per National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) the bank linkage to women’s Self Help Groups in 2012-13 across the nation was more than Rs 21,000 crore, of which Gujarat accounted for just Rs 120 crore. ‘In Andhra Pradesh and in Tamil Nadu the figure is Rs 11,200 crore and Rs 2,900 crore respectively. Even in Bihar, it is higher at Rs 222 crore, which more than Gujarat,’ he said.

While taking a dig on Gujarat’s sex ratio (number of women per 1,000 males) and the female infant (below the age of one year per 1,000 live births) mortality rate, the minister said, ‘The figure in Gujarat is 919, which is worst as compare to the national level figure of 943. As per the office of registrar general of India statistics in 2012, Gujarat is leading with 39 deaths, which higher as compare to other states like Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and West Bengal.’
Not the least the minister claimed that female under-five mortality rate (death below the age of five per 1000 live births in 2012) shows that  Gujarat once again leading the figure with 50 deaths as compare other states like Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and West Bengal.
On the context of maternal mortality rate (deaths per 1,00,000 live births), he said, ‘The statistics given by the office of registrar general of India is suggests that Gujarat once again ahead of other states with a figure of 122 in 2010-12. The least was reported from Kerala with 66 deaths.’
Ramesh, while welcoming Modi’s thought on ‘women empowerment and importance of girl child’, said, ‘His track record of achievement in this area even after over a decade as chief minister does not support his boasts.’
