Modi wakes up to the power of AK-49

The BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has started feeling the ‘might’ of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal. On Wednesday, he hit out at the former Delhi chief minister by referring to him as AK-49. This was Modi’s first-ever direct attack on Kejriwal after the latter decided to contest the general elections from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh against him. The ‘AK-49’ remark was a reference to Kejriwal’s stint as the Delhi chief minister that lasted for 49 days.

This statement from Modi clearly shows that he now started feeling that the former Delhi chief minister might prove to be an ‘albatross around his neck’. Hours after Modi accused Arvind Kejriwal of helping Pakistan and called him ‘AK-49’ in his rally in Udhampur in Jammu & Kashmir, the Aam Aadmi Party leader slammed Modi back by saying: ‘The Gujarat chief minister avoids debates on controversial issues. He should not use such language being the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP. He should talk about issues rather than get personal.’

‘There are three AKs in Pakistan that are being admired. AK-47, AK Antony and AK-49. This third one, AK 49, has just launched a political party,’ Modi said addressing a gathering of BJP supporters at Hiranagar, close to the India-Pakistan International Border, in Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency.

He added, ‘This AK-49 on his website shows Kashmir as a part of Pakistan. His close aide wants a referendum on Kashmir and Pakistan is jumping with joy.’

While countering Modi’s allegation, Kejriwal tweeted, ‘Did Modi ji call me an agent of Pakistan and AK 49? Kya PM ke daawedar ko ye bhasha use karna shobha deta hai? (Should a PM candidate use such language?).’ He accused Modi of skirting issues, backing corrupt politicians and fielding scam-tainted candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. ‘Modi ji muddon ki baat kyon nahi karte? Muddon ki rajniti kyon nahi karte? (Why does he consistently avoid all invites for open debates?)’ he asked.

Kejriwal questioned Modi on his silence on the issue of gas price and his ‘false claims’ of Gujarat development. He also said Modi refuses to talk about farmer suicides in his state. ‘He refuses to respond on why they have kept corrupt people like Babubhai Bokharia and Purshottam Solanki in his cabinet. Why? He refuses to respond on his compulsions to give tickets to Muzaffarnagar riot accused. Why? He refuses to respond on his compulsions to give tickets to corrupt people like Yeddyurappa, Sriramlu and Ramvilas Paswan. Why?’ Kejriwal asked.
