Modi may have been wary of inducting Shah in PMO

With BJP leader Amit Shah emerging as a frontrunner for the post of the party president, many in the party feel that prime minister Narendra Modi does not want any ‘albatross around his neck’ while performing day-to-day activities considering ongoing cases against him.

Though the official announcement is yet to be made, but party insiders claimed that a section of cabinet ministers do not want Shah to be inducted in the PMO. ‘This is the reason he was not considered as minister of State (MoS), PMO and it was given to Jitendra Singh,’ sources said.
‘Modi ji does not want to compromise on quality while sitting on the chair of prime minister. Nor does he want any hurdle and controversy in the PMO,’ a party insider said, while replying whether the pressure is from Modi himself to make him the party president or not.

The pro-Modi lobby wants Shah to engage in party related activities considering assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir are due this year rather than his presence in PMO. ‘Many people are saying that because of his effort and result in UP in Lok Sabha election he was considered for the party post but in realty the move is to politically barred him from the PMO activities,’ BJP sources said.

A source said, ‘Despite Amit ji’s, differences with some of the leaders in states, his name was considered for the post. There was no compulsion to push his name and it would be wrong to say that there were no other potential candidates. We have Jagat Prakash Nadda ji from Himachal Pradesh whose connect with the karyakartas are better than Amit ji. But his chances are less. One of the reasons is Modi ji has to give him some prominent post but he was wary of placing Amit ji in PMO.’

When asked whether it was demotion for Shah, who worked closely with Modi as home minister in Gujarat and was handpicked by him to handle UP, he said, ‘I would not see this move as a demotion or promotion. The whole theory is different because Modi want to function clean with no controversies, which will give opponents a chance to make issues out of no issue.’ Sources said, the party will soon announce his name after making a ‘clean platform’ considering pending cases against him in connection with the Gujarat alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and wife Kauserbi in 2005 and the killing of witness Tulsiram Prajapati in 2006. Shah, himself, has hinted at becoming the party president on 18 June when one of his tweets meant for the BJP workers, read, ‘By assisting others you can make them your associates’.
