Modi govt to set up ‘rape crisis’ cell after Badaun gang-rapes


“Police laxity is equally responsible for the incident due to which two girls lost their lives. Police is still not acting in the right direction. All policemen involved in the incident should be terminated,” she told PTI over phone.

“If the girls’ family members want a CBI probe, I will recommend it,” she added. The minister said that she would soon constitute a “rape crisis cell” to ensure speedy action in such matters. The two girls, who were cousins and aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in a village in Ushait area the next morning.

The postmortem report of the two girls confirmed that they were raped before being murdered.

Maya wants CBI probe 

Lucknow: Charging that there has been a spurt in crime cases in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after the Lok Sabha polls, BSP supremo Mayawati on Friday demanded a CBI probe into the gangrape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Badaun district.

Mayawati also demanded that President’s Rule be imposed in the state.

‘The Centre should order a CBI probe into the gangrape and murder of two girls of Shakya (Dalit) community’, she told reporters here.

Mayawati said: ‘Law and order situation is pathetic. In such a scenario, the Governor should make recommendation for President’s rule in the state’.

Attacking the Samajwadi Party, Mayawati alleged that Samajwadi Party had joined hands with Bharatiya Janata Party to ‘polarise’ voters but the plan could not help it.

Hope you haven’t faced any danger: UP CM

Kanpur: “I hope you have not faced any danger,” shot back Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday when asked about the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of the Badaun rape and murder case and the Azamgarh gangrape incident.

Yadav, who was here on a visit, said arrests have been made in the gangrape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Badaun and action was also being taken against guilty police officials.
Asked what was his view on the law and order situation in UP in the wake of the incident, he retorted, “I hope you have not faced any danger!”

10 rapes reported daily in UP on an average: NCRB

Lucknow: On an average 10 rapes are reported everyday in Uttar Pradesh, a senior police official said today quoting National Crime Record Bureau data.

"According to NCRB, UP is at the 22nd place as far as crime is concerned. Here, 10 rapes are reported everyday on an average of which 60-65 per cent took place when they (women) went to attend nature's call (in the open)," IG STF, Ashish Gupta told reporters here. Gupta was replying to questions against the backdrop of the gangrape and murder of two Dalit sisters in Badaun and another incident of gangrape in Azamgarh, the constitutency of Mulayam Singh Yadav.
