Mob pelt stones at Babul Supriyo in his own constituency

Union Minister of state for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises and a Member of Parliament from Asansol, Babul Supriyo, was attacked by a mob near BNR More of Asansol on Wednesday.

The convoy of the singer turned politician was attacked by a mob when he was going to join an agitation organised by the local BJP leaders in the area during which a car was badly damaged.

BJP have blamed Trinamool Congress backed goons of carrying out the attack. The charges have, however, been denied by district Trinamool Congress leaders who have said that none of their party members were involved in the incident.

Supriyo received minor injuries in this incident. A mob pelted stones on him when his convoy was surrounded by them. The minister, however, alleged that he was attacked with brickbats and the mob went on a rampage ransacking his vehicle. Two other BJP activists who were accompanying him also received injuries in the incident.

Tension escalated when some BJP workers put up demonstration in front of the residence of senior Trinamool Congress leader and the state labour minister Malay Ghatak to protest against alleged cow smuggling incidents which have gone up in recent times as claimed by the BJP. Some local Trinamool Congress supporters went to the spot and the asked the BJP supporters to lift the demonstration. A quarrel broke out between the two groups which soon turned into a scuffle. During the incident, a BJP activist was reportedly injured. On hearing about the incident Supriyo started off for the spot.

The state BJP leaders alleged that Supriyo’s vehicle was stopped allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters and they pelted stones at him. One of the brickbats had hit him on his stomach. Supriyo said: “A mob comprised of Trinamool Congress backed goons injured me by throwing brickbats and vandalising my car. Police did not arrest the accused because they are the supporters of the ruling party. BJP supporters have been arrested by the police instead”.

He also tweeted by showing his injury marks that he had suffered during the alleged attack. The Trinamool Congress district President V Shivadasan, however, ruled out Supriyo’s claims involving Trinamool Congress supporters in the brick batting.

When Supriyo reached BNR More an angry mob pelted stones on him. The minister alleged police inaction in the incident. He said that police played the role of mute spectators when an agitated mob attacked his convoy.
