Mob blocks Adarsh Nagar road over murder of wrestler

Locals went out on a rampage in the slum cluster of Sarai Pipal Thala, breaking window panes of three DTC buses, pelting stones at police force, which left five police officials injured when a mob took to the streets over the murder of a 35-year-old man living in a slum cluster in North-West Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar on Thursday morning.

The victim, Rakesh Kumar (35), was shot in the head by unidentified men allegedly over the issue of personal enmity. The incident happened on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday at around 1 am when he had gone to meet his friends. The road leading towards the Adarsh Nagar metro station was completely blocked by angry neighbours and family members of Rakesh, who was a wrestler, and against whom a criminal case is also registered. It also led to the shutting down of the metro station for half an hour, said police personnel. Around 50 police personnel were deployed by the Delhi Police to pacify the angry crowd. Suman, Rakesh’s sister said: “My brother went to meet his friends when he was shot dead. He was also stabbed by an ice pick in the heart. He was the sole breadwinner of our family. We are four sisters, out of whom one is unmarried. We are helpless as there is no one to take care of us.”

Apart from his sisters, he was survived by his wife, Geeta and a son and two daughters. According to the police official present on the site, the mob comprising neighbours and family members of Rakesh became furious and it was one of the locals who instigated the family to protest on the road till the accused are arrested by the police.
