Mob attacks police after youth’s body was found

Four policemen were injured when local people pelted stones at them when tension broke out at Harinchaora village at Cooch Behar after the body of a youth was recovered there. Mystery shrouds the death of the 24-year-old youth, Ennatur Hossain, whose body was found hanging from a tree in the garden adjacent to his house.

After receiving information, police went to the spot to send the body for an autopsy. Local people had gheraoed the police and damaged their vehicle. They also started pelting stones when the police tried to take the body pushing the mob aside.

The victim was the son of the secretary of a Self Help Group against whom there were allegations of misappropriation of fund. Some members of the group had lodged a complaint against the woman with the police. The police went to her house on Monday night for investigation.

The mysterious death of her son the day after the police went her house for investigation had led to annoyance among the close aides of the secretary of the Self Help Group.

Though police suspect that the youth had committed suicide, the victim’s family members said that he was hanged after being killed. “A probe has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of his death and police have collected samples from the spot. Investigating officers have also spoken to some of his friends,” a police officer said.
