Missing youth’s body fished out of river

Tension broke out at Bangshibihari in South Dinajpur after the body of a youth, who was missing from Wednesday night, was fished out from Tangon River in the area.

A large contingent of police was pressed into action to bring the situation under control.

Police said the victim Anil Murmu went to a hooch den on Wednesday night when officials of the Excise department conducted a raid. Everyone in the den started running to avoid getting arrested.

Anil too started running. But he found someone running behind him to get hold of him. Apprehending that the police was chasing him, he jumped into the river and drowned.

As the incident had taken place late Wednesday night, no one had seen him falling into the river.

Thus, his family members and local people had started searching for him considering that he had taken shelter in any of his friends’ house.

Finally, a villager found Anil’s slipper on the bank of the river and ascertained that he must have fallen in. The local people started searching for him in the river, but couldn’t find him.

The search continued till morning. Finally divers were pressed and they found Anil’s body on Thursday afternoon. The body was sent for an autopsy.

The situation turned worse after the body was fished out of the river.

The local people started staging demonstration protesting against the incident. Senior police officers intervened and brought the situation under control.

Local people demanded strict action against such dens to stop people going to those places.
