Miscreants throw ATM on road after foiled loot attempt

A gang of miscreants on late Monday night dislodged an ATM machine from the counter after being unable to break it open.

According to the police, some unidentified miscreants tried to steal money by breaking open an unmanned ATM machine. The incident occurred at an ATM counter of a nationalised bank at Kandi in Murshidabad district.

As they failed to break open the machine, they dislodged it from the counter and brought it out on the road.

Finally, they had to leave it there after they failed to take any cash from the machine. The incident triggered minor tension in the area on Tuesday morning, with local people raising the security of the customers visiting unmanned ATM machines in the area.

Police said that there was no security guard posted at the ATM counter. A little after midnight, the criminals entered into the ATM counter and tried to break open the machine. After a prolonged effort, the miscreants failed to take out any cash from the machine.

Failing to take out any cash, the miscreants decided to take out the machine. Police are currently going through the CCTV footages that were available with the bank. They have started an investigation in this regard.

Police are yet to arrest anybody in this connection. Raids are being conducted to locate and arrest the culprits, a senior police official in the district said.

The ATM machine was spotted by some local people early Tuesday morning on the Kandi-Berhampur state highway. They informed the matter at the local police station. Police reached the spot and initiated an inquiry into the incident.

Police said that miscreants failed to loot cash from the ATM machine and could have thrown out the machine out of frustration.

Police also said that many miscreants try to take advantage when many ATM machines remain unguarded in the area.
