The incident occurred at an ATM counter of a nationalised bank at Khagra Bari Bazar in Cooch Behar on Monday night.
According to the bank authorities, there was over Rs 20 lakh cash inside the ATM machine when the incident took place. The incident had triggered tension in the area.
Police said that there was no security guard posted at the ATM counter. A little after midnight, the criminals entered into the ATM counter and tried to break open the machine. After a prolonged effort, the miscreants failed to bring out the cash from the machine.
As a result of this, the miscreants decided to take away the machine. Police suspect that they brought a vehicle without which the machine could not be transported from one place to another.
The police were trying to go through the CCTV footages that were available with the bank. They have started an investigation in this regard. Police are yet to arrest anybody in this connection so far.
Raids were being conducted to arrest the culprits, a senior police official in the district said.
