Miscreants attack bizman’s car, kill driver in Hooghly

Unidentified miscreants opened fired at a businessman and the driver of his car when they were running home late on Wednesday night. The driver was killed on the spot while the businessman was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. The incident took place at Rameshwarpur off Pandua in Hooghly. 

Tension gripped the area as local people staged demonstration demanding arrest of the accused. 

Police said Ariful Hossain, a contractor, was returning home in his car from office and he was carrying huge amount of money in a bag. 

Naman Baul Das, the driver, applied breaks when he suddenly found sacs containing sand was kept on the road. As soon as he stopped the car, unidentified miscreants with their faces covered approached Hossain. 

They asked him to handover whatever he had with him. One of the miscreants had even asked to vacate the car. 

However, Hossain refused to listen to them. The situation turned worst when the miscreants found a truck approaching on the same route. 

They hurried asked the businessman to vacate his car. Finding that Hossain and the driver were not ready to follow their instructions, they beat up Hossain and opened fire as he retaliated. 

The truck had spread sped up and left the place assessing that something was going wrong at that place.

Das received several bullet injuries and died on spot. The businessman was found in an unconscious state beside the road. Local people on Thursday found the driver’s body lying on front seat of the car and there were blood stains all over his body. 

after getting information, policemen rushed to the spot and took the driver’s body and the businessman to Hooghly Imambara Hospital. Doctors told policemen that Das had died at least five hours ago and they admitted Hossain, who is undergoing treatment.  

Police are yet to ascertain the exact motive behind the crime. The investigating officers spoke to the businessman’s family members to know whether he had rivalry with anyone. 

The family members revealed some names to the police with whom there businessman’s relation was not good. A senior police officer said they were looking into various aspects. 

“We are first trying to ascertain whether it is a case of robbery as it takes place in highways or business rivalry led to the crime. Some people have also been interrogated. But no one was arrested yet,” the police officer said.
